HUNTING AT B. A. STEINHAGEN LAKE (DAM “B”)
TOWN BLUFF PROJECT, US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

1.  The management of wildlife and public hunting at B. A. Steinhagen Lake (Dam”B”) is a cooperative effort between the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).  Approximately 13,000 acres of Federal land and water surface north of U. S. Highway 190 is managed by TPWD as the Angelina-Neches/Dam “B” Wildlife Management Area (WMA).  Public hunting on the WMA is managed by TPWD under their Public Hunting Lands Program.  Hunters are required to purchase an annual permit from TPWD for permission to hunt on the WMA.  Further information about hunting on the WMA may be obtained by calling TPWD at 1-800-792-1112, or the local office at 409-384-6894.

2.  In addition to the Angelina/Neches/Dam “B” WMA, approximately 900 acres of land managed directly by the Corps is also available for public hunting.  These lands exist as relatively small, isolated tracts which may border developed park areas, public roads and rural homesites.  Generally, the boundary of these areas is well marked with orange paint on trees.  To ensure that public hunting is compatible with adjoining land use, the following rules apply to these lands and are enforced by the Corps of Engineers:
a.  Except as noted below, hunting seasons, bag limits and firearms and archery restrictions are in accordance with state and federal law.  Refer to the current Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Manual for current regulations.  Seasons and bag limits for waterfowl are published separately.
b.  Hunting is allowed during designated hunting seasons only.
c.  The following game may be hunted during the hunting season as stated in the TPWD hunting regulations:  dove, quail, squirrel, rabbits, waterfowl, deer and feral hogs.  Note:  Doe deer hunting is allowed only during the “Archery Only” season; hog hunting is allowed from the beginning of deer season through March 15; rabbit hunting is allowed from September 1 through the end of March.
d.  Hunting of shooting within 600 feet of homes, parks, farms or ranch yards and anywhere signs are posted, “NO HUNTING” is prohibited.
e.  Target shooting is prohibited.
f.  Rifles and pistols are prohibited.
g.  Lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl hunting.
h.  Buckshot and shot larger than #4 lead or #2 non-toxic is prohibited.
i.  Only shotguns with slugs, muzzle-loading rifles .45 caliber or larger, and legal archery equipment are allowed for hunting deer or hogs.
j.  Permanent duck or deer blinds are prohibited.  Temporary blinds made of loose, unfastened native vegetation are permitted.  Portable stands or blinds are also permitted so long as they do not damage government property and are removed after each day’s hunt.
k.  Proper wearing of “hunter orange” is highly recommended.
l.  Trapping is prohibited.
m.  Shooting of fur-bearing animals, as listed in TPWD hunting regulations, is prohibited.
n.  The use of dogs for hunting or tracking of wounded deer is prohibited.
o.  Use of any motorized vehicle is prohibited for gaining access to Project hunting lands except by lake or State, County and Project designated roadways.  Vehicles must be parked in designated areas outside of Project hunting areas or alongside roadways adjacent to Project hunting areas, so as to maintain an unobstructed roadway.  Wheeled, motorized vehicles are prohibited for transport, access or hunting inside Project hunting areas except for disabled persons who possess a physician’s statement certifying that they meet the criteria for an ambulatory disability that is permanent.

3.  Public access to most of the land north or U. S. Highway 190 is by boat only.  Primitive campsites in the WMA are available by special permit from the Town Bluff Project Office.
